Member Spotlight - Catherine Cara, PharmD Candidate and Co-Founder of Athlete Rx

ARCHIVED from 4/2025

Catherine Cara is a USSPG student member and student pharmacist at Washington State University, MS Candidate at Concordia University Chicago, President and Co-founder of AthleteRx at WSU. Peyton Anderson, Board Student Member at Large reached out to Catherine to learn more about her personal journey in sports pharmacy.

Peyton: “What has been your favorite experience in Sports Pharmacy?”

Catherine: “Sparking my classmates’ interest in sports pharmacy. This topic has been such a passionate area of interest, my fellow USSPG student pharmacists, Trey Flynn, Shannon Doan, and I founded a student organization called AthleteRx at WSU. It has been a joy to witness WSU student pharmacists, professors, staff, and alumni, as well as family and friends show their enthusiasm and support for this unique niche of the pharmacy profession.”

Peyton: “What do you think is the most important way pharmacists can impact sports medicine?”

Catherine: “Pharmacists not only take into consideration the impact of medications and supplements on an athlete’s overall health, but pharmacists will also keep in mind how those drug therapies could impact an athletic performance.”

Peyton: “What made you want to join the USSPG?”

Catherine: “To be more involved in the opportunities the organization had available such as participating in committee activities, attending educational webinars, and helping to promote its Annual Meeting through social media. Through these opportunities, I’m able to network with other sports pharmacy professionals and begin to lay out my pathway towards becoming a sports pharmacist after graduation.”

Thanks to student pharmacists like Catherine Cara, sports pharmacy will continue to grow amongst the profession and positively impact the national landscape.
