Defining Sports Pharmacy - USSPG Define Sports Pharmacy Taskforce

Given the continuously growing field of sports pharmacy, a core pillar of the USSPG’s 2024-2025 strategic plan was to create a unifying definition of Sports Pharmacy to advance the field of sports pharmacy and solidify its role in the global healthcare landscape. The Taskforce was made up of eight sports pharmacy leaders with various experiences in sports pharmacy, working in a variety of pharmacy settings. The taskforce reviewed one hundred twenty-three USSPG member definitions of sports pharmacy and 20 articles from across the globe. The member definitions and articles identified eight themes and subthemes which were used to help guide the definition and ensure it comprehensively addressed each aspect. Drafts of the proposed definition completed three rounds of review from various stakeholders and sports medicine professions, prior to a final review and vote on the definition by the USSPG Board of Directors.

Since the creation, the Sports Pharmacy definition has been utilized to educate and advocate for the growth of sports pharmacy. Sports pharmacy organizations and stakeholders come together to support the definition including the International Sports Pharmacy Network, University of Southern California, and Wingate University.
